Why your real LLM bill is higher than the estimate

A token calculator tells you the cost of a call that goes perfectly. Production doesn't. Three things inflate the real number, and none of them show up in a simple calculator:

  • Retries and silent failures.A tool call times out, a JSON parse fails, a rate limit hits — the agent retries, and you pay for every attempt. At a 5% failure rate that's 5% of your spend producing nothing; at 15% it's a serious leak.
